Floridian Stories

Counter to what many individuals outside of Floria think not everyone in Florida has a beach in their backyard and summer isn't all that sunny. The part of Florida where I grew up was quiet. It's covered in pasture, there was wild life everywhere, and there are tons of different types of people to meet. That is the Florida I've grown to love.

Things to shoot:

Dreezy's - Writing Assignment - Intimate Journey through Apalachicola

I’m aiming to take photos of my hometown in the Historic Apalachicola Florida. It is very small; in our entire county the graduating class was 55 students. I want to take the viewer on an intimate journey with Apalach. Most of the images, I don't want to be to personal involving me. I want it to be just the viewer and the town. I want to show them a little bit of everything; nature, historic buildings, and most importantly the community that I grew up in that is beautifully rustic. Instead of considering this a proposal I would rather consider it a creative poetic flow. Here is my perspective that can give you a visual before I start shooting, take a second and read it to yourself and envision yourself on this intimate journey:

Ocean waves and birds chirping,

It’s just another beautiful day in Apalachicola, Florida.

The sun brightening our town.

The water flowing up the river.

Right on the edge of the state, on the panhandle.

The tourist pay to come here

But the best part of our area is free.

I’m talking about the nature.

The land, water, and animals.

We don’t have a backyard,

We have a water front.

The long stretch of water is the Apalachicola Bay.

There is no McDonalds, no Walmart

And the closest mall is 2 hours away.

We only have one traffic light.

We run off the nature,

We live off the water.

We’re known for our seafood, nature, and history.

They call us the oyster town.

The best scenes in town are right outside our door.

The history is everywhere you turn.

Tear down old houses, no.

We don’t want to do that.

We could never do that.

We want to save our past.

We need to save our past

Tradition is what we thirst for.

We don’t have much.

But we love every single thing we have.

From the old oyster shells

to the rusty historical artifact.

Our town is unique.

It’s peaceful

It’s perfect

It’s Apalachicola.

Project Idea

Interested in:
  • Animals
  • Water
  • Recreational Sports
  • Weather
  • Architecture

I like the idea of looking at Floridian animals, but I think it would be really difficult to try to find them and then capture them (Florida Panthers, I'm looking at you. Likewise Burrowing Owls). I think I'm gravitating towards looking at water. You can do a lot with water being the focus. Since Florida is surround by water as a peninsula, that ties into the weather phenomenons of Florida of frequent thunderstorms and rain showers. As water is a necessity of life, I could tie in photos of plants and animals as well. Similarly, I could look at the effects of water on architecture.

Floridian Stories

ideas for floridian stories
-people
-homes and places where people stay
-manmade structures vs nature
-wildlife vs domesticated animals
-places in fl that are not the sunny, beachy, touristy areas that people normally think of
-independently owned shops and restaurants

i think the idea of capturing mundane moments in peoples' lives is interesting. people are one of the things i think that i, as a floridian, have access to that not everyone does. the landscapes and the weather other people can easily experience, but the people who live here are not as easily available to strangers. however, besides just capturing the people, i also want to capture the places the live and build. the people who build and mold florida are the ones who really make it what it is.

Floridian Stories

I love to people watch. I'm really interested in how people think and how they interact in more social conditions, outside of school or the workplace. I also enjoy taking shots at night, because of the effect of artificial light from lightbulbs and cars. My theme for Floridian Stories would be nightlife, both downtown and on campus.

Floridian Stories Project Concept

I have lived in Florida my entire life, spending most of my time no further South than Sarasota, although I have been to Miami and the Fort Lauderdale area a few times. My family all moved down here from other, Northern states in search of jobs, weather, or for health reasons. As a young girl (and as a not so young girl) I spent time clambering around Florida's natural landscape both inland and coastal.

Although Florida's natural beauty is a dominant part of what defines Florida, there are many other areas of interest for me. Historically, I have always been fascinated by local peoples - the native Indian tribes that settled here for generations, the Spanish invasion and conquering of La Florida, and the lifestyles of the southern coastal cities like Miami - the roles they play in drug culture or human trafficking and slave running, for example.

For this project, I hope to research these topics, and combine aspects of both the natural beauty with Florida's perhaps not so glamorous past. In connection with my current body of work, I have been focusing on art as a form of therapy when healing from trauma. My work for this class, I hope to relate to this topic by using photographs (sometimes indirectly) to illustrate, expose, and in some cases document buildings, people and places related to the above topics. To do this, I expect to experiment with composition, depth of field, and time of day to create atmosphere and convey mood.

Project Ideas

Interests

  • Animals - particularly birds, cats and dogs; cows, cranes, alligators and turtles as well
  • Nature
  • Buildings - especially older buildings
  • Waterscapes
  • Maybe a sundog if I can find one, or a rainbow

MY INTERESTING LIFE

  • I have 5 brothers and 2 sisters, thats pretty rare. And interesting, always.
  • I'm from a small town where everyone knows your business. Leesburg- look it up you have probably never heard of it.
  • I live off campus with one of my older brothers and his friend, John. 2 boys + me = interesting.
  • I am going to Japan this summer.
  • I am taking Intro to Arts in Healthcare and looking into my future with that- that's why I am an art major (*but not BFA).
  • I like clay. Ceramics. I'm taking throwing right now and although I am not good at it yet- I love it. That's my real passion.
  • I like very feminine things? 3 older brothers yet I somehow escaped that tomboy stage at a young age. Lace, dresses, colors, shabby chic, organization, simplicity, and my pug. A few of my favorite things.
  • I'm an art major, in a sorority, yet I don't drink and I am a Christian. That's pretty interesting, I don't fit the norm there.
  • Oh yeah, speaking of pugs, my pug is almost 6 and I have had her since I was 14. Having a dog is a joy most college kids don't have.
  • I am a third generation Gator. Literally, I bleed orange and blue. My family has no mercy for FSU.
  • I am also a third generation Leesburgian. And my dads independent pharmacy (in Leesburg) is celebrating 50 years of business). Pretty thrilling for an independent.
  • Some of my family hails from McIntosh… not far from here! It's an even smaller town that Leesburg. I might need to take a drive there and take some pictures of our beginning.
  • I am going to be an aunt for the first time this year.
  • I HAVE A PRETTY COOL LIFE.

Floridian Stories Assignment

As I think about my final portfolio for the Floridian Stories assignment, I think about compiling a group of images depicting aspects of Florida that have been an essential part of my life until now, in the unique way that I see them. I want to capture the atmosphere of places that have been important to my family and I during my childhood. I want to capture the surroundings of my home, in Miami and here in Gainesville, that most people do not pay attention to. I like to look in the details and examine scenes in a different way than the cursory glance most people give their surroundings. Not only exhibiting the beauty of what’s around me, I also have an interest in capturing photographs of strangers, as well as people I know, In their natural habitat. Capturing how they live in and interact with their environment. What makes them unique and how the Floridian neighborhood they live in contributes to that. Finally, I would like to make an effort to travel to places in Florida that I have yet to see, in order to capture a general ambiance of Florida and analyze how each diverse location with its unique inhabitants connects to one another.

Week 2: Adventuring

Dreezy's 10 Photos - Assignment 2

I decided to take more photos of nature on campus. I tried not to get any buildings within the photos. I took photos of similar things and I tried to use the same approach. For example, I have multiple photos of bark textures from different trees. I think the hardest part was making the images black and white. I could not use some of my best images because they were so monotone without color. I think my best photos have a lot of contrast and also depth. I like the photos that showed one item and made it the focal point. Isolation made many of the objects stand out. I mainly want to work on "seeing the world in black and white" as the video said.

Week 2 Pictures

I like the last one because I caught a bird in flight.
